Preparing a first-grader for school

eachers about how to prepare for school and what a first-grader should know.

On the eve of September 1, the parents of first graders worry the most. Should the child be able to read and write already? What if he doesn’t fit in with the team? What about the marks and textbooks? There’s always a lot of questions. The observer of “RIAMO in Podolsk” learned from experienced teachers of school № 1 of the Klimovsk micro-district, how to prepare for classes and what awaits children in the first grade.

I don’t recommend teaching children to write in advance. Very often they get used to holding the wrong pen – then have to learn, and it is more difficult than learning from scratch. We still start with basic elements – sticks, ticks, hooks, dots. Go to the site and find out more also better not to teach children to count. Because a child comes to school who can count to 100 and back, and we start to study the program with the number “1” – the child is convinced that he already knows everything and does not need to teach anything. But later, when the really difficult material begins, the child begins to seriously fall behind the class.

But you have to learn to read! In first grade, the requirements are high, and those who can not, will be difficult. As a rule, first graders already know all the letters and can read a little. By the end of the first year, children should read 35-40 words per minute.

Children can start learning to read at around 2.5 years of age when there is interest and desire. This is also useful when the child is hyperactive, because reading helps to develop assiduity. By the way, this is facilitated by coloring classes, compulsory and a quiet hour in the afternoon.

In the preparatory courses, I focus on teaching reading. We study the letter of Nadezhda Zhukova – this is, in my opinion, the best textbook. In the lessons I seat children in groups – with some add syllables, others learn to read, third read books and then retell the read.

Parents, remember: the more the child reads, the better. And the sooner children start reading big books, the better they will develop their thinking, imagination and outlook.

In first grade, the children study 35 minutes each. In the first two weeks, three lessons are added, then overtime activities are added. When the children are ready, the lessons last until about one o’clock in the afternoon, plus overtime activities for two hours.

Those who study at a section or music school may miss one or two classes, according to their parents’ request. Extra-curricular activities are optional, and may include dancing, drama or local history.

I like to give children creative tasks to develop logic. In the past, when there were no extra-curricular activities, they were often missed to learn the main material. Now time has been allocated for them, and this is wonderful – without the development of logic it is impossible to fully develop a child.

I advise parents of first-graders to prepare their children for the new regime in advance. They will have to completely rebuild: they will get up early for lessons, but in summer, as a rule, sleep long. It is better to start in time to wake up the kids early to get used to, as well as to accustom them to a certain routine.

School preparation courses are usually attended by children who do not attend kindergartens. Children’s socialization takes place there, and this is very important. The child must first learn to communicate with other children, otherwise it will be very difficult for him to adapt to school, even despite the large baggage of knowledge.

Our school has been running training courses for future first graders for 15 years. They are rather psychological – children get to know each other and the teacher, communicate and play. But attention is also paid to reading with mathematics, children learn letters and numbers. Classes are held once a week from October to May, and come after kindergarten for about one hour.

This is a paid educational service – training costs 1 thousand rubles per month. Parents of children write an application in advance with a request to take their child to the courses of preparation for school and if desired specify the teacher. To me, for example, already come the children of my former students.
