“There will be no universities in the modern sense in 100 years”, said DeMillo. “There may be a couple of recognizable Go math 7th grade answer key names, probably Harvard or Oxford. But higher education will be available to everyone, will be mediated through technology, will probably be offered on a number of commercial platforms and will be very, very inexpensive”.
Knowledge will become a commodity and, in fact, is already on its way, adds Cameron Evans, CTO of American Education at Microsoft.
Therefore, higher education will have to find a way to focus not on teaching knowledge, but on applying it.
“If something changes significantly over the next 25 years, it will be something that people won’t go to school to get knowledge,” Evans says. “They’ll go there for experiences they couldn’t have otherwise obtained online,” Evans said.
Experience within the institution will focus on high-level activities where professors will act as assistants in project-oriented education or as tutors with a high level of understanding, said Michael Staton, founder of Ingral, a closed community on Facebook for colleges and universities. “If you can study the same material online at the same speed or even faster, why go to school,” Staton asks.
One of the dangers of the fully technological model, according to Theis, is that underprivileged students will learn through technology. And other wealthier students will go to prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale or Stanford.
But others believe that this division is not related to technology. “We see a big social and economic gap in who is studying at which colleges,” Wildawski says. “So the arrival of technology will not create what already exists.
Moreover, not all models of technological education are necessarily bad. Older students can have a particularly positive effect from online learning. Some students may choose technology education because the experience within it is quite good, says Wildawski.
For example, former Stanford professor Sebastian Thrun taught an Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course at the university in 2011, along with Peter Norvig, research director at Google. But they also started teaching this course online for free. As a result, many face-to-face students have moved to an online version of the course.
As more and more students try to enroll, leading universities are becoming more discerning, DeMillo adds. They select students based on the quality of their school education, which means they choose based on their ZIP code and economic status.
“We’re already going through this process, and it has nothing to do with online education,” DeMillo says.
