Portsmouth National Historic District
The replacement of the Memorial Bridge in downtown Portsmouth was a federally funded project that required mitigation for the loss of a nationally significant resource individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as well as a contributing resources to a National Register eligible downtown historic district. One of the mitigation stipulations for this project was a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Portsmouth downtown historic district. The NH Division of Historic Resources (DHR) in partnership with the NH Department of Transportation and Federal Highways oversaw the preparation of the nomination for the district with boundaries and mapping that conforms to National Park Service Guidelines.
The Portsmouth Downtown National Historic District was listed to the National Register in June of 2017. This District is separate and distinct from Portsmouth's Local Historic District.
