Last year, the Portsmouth School Board established the Educational Opportunity Fund. This fund was established in alignment with our goal to close gaps of opportunity for students and to create even more intentional structures to ensure equitable learning environments. Specifically, this fund assists students on Free and Reduced Lunch in accessing school-sponsored educational programs which require a fee. These could include fees associated with certain high school courses (running start, dual enrollment, etc.) or activities such as field trips. We feel strongly that all students thrive best in a barrier-free learning environment.
For information about the Opportunity Fund, read the article Closing the Opportunity Gap in Portsmouth Schools.
The response to this fund from our community has been amazing! In addition to the support from the School Board and City Council in establishing this fund, the fund has received almost $10,000 in private donations from staff members, community members, alumni, School Board Members, and City Councilors. These contributions have already had an impact on increasing access for students to a variety of educational and enrichment offerings.
