Sister Cities International

New Haven is a member of Sister Cities International and is part of a global network of more than 2,300 partnerships in 135 countries. Sister Cities International (www.sister-cities.org) is a non-profit citizen diplomacy network creating and strengthening partnerships between U.S. and international communities in an effort to increase global cooperation at the municipal level, to promote cultural understanding, and to stimulate economic development. Begun in 1956 after a White House summit where U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower called for people-to-people exchanges, sister city partnerships are tailored to local interests and increase global cooperation at the grassroots level. Sister Cities International promotes peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.

SCI leads the U.S. movement for local communities to partner with counterparts abroad and develop volunteer action by motivating and empowering private citizens, municipal officials, and business leaders to conduct long-term programs of mutual benefit.

Visit the Sister Cities International Website - an excellent place for newcomers to learn about Sister Cities International and the sister cities network.
