Auxiliary Police Officer Employment (Part-Time)

NO AVAILABLE POSITIONS AT THIS TIME

The Portsmouth Police Auxiliary Unit is a part-time force designed to augment the full-time force, primarily by working outside details and major events. The Auxiliary force is not used to work regular patrol shifts but occasionally is called upon to work coverage patrols while the full-time force is absent.  The members of the Auxiliary force receive regular training throughout the year alongside the full-time police officers. The Police Department will regularly look to fill full-time positions from its Auxiliary members, for those interested.

Expectations

  • Must work a minimum of 12 hours of outside work details per month
  • Must work at least 2 coverage patrols per year
  • Must complete one 8-hour ride-along with a full-time Field Training Officer every six months.
  • Must attend Auxiliary meetings

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Experience:

  1. Must be a US citizen
  2. Applicant must be 21 years of age prior to receiving a conditional offer of employment
  3. High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
  4. Military experience or post-secondary schooling is strongly recommended
  5. Must have no criminal record
  6. Must possess a valid driver's license

Application Process

The Portsmouth Police Department has an ongoing recruitment process for sworn personnel. We only accept applications and resumes submitted electronically at:

https://www.policeapp.com/Portsmouth-NH-Police-Department/820/

An entry-level / non-certified candidate, interested in becoming an Auxiliary police officer, must have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Taken the Great Bay Exam with a score of 70 or higher within the past year or,
  • Associate's degree or higher or,
  • Military veteran or,
  • Prior completion or current enrollment in a state police academy

Click here for Great Bay testing dates and information on how to register

A certified full time Officer candidate who is looking to transition to part-time can apply without any of the above prerequisites.

Additional Phases of the Selection Process

Those applicants who complete the above will be reviewed and potentially invited to participate in a physical agility test (requirements listed below). Candidates who pass will be invited to a formal oral board interview. Applicants who participate in an oral board interview are evaluated, scored, and placed on an eligibility list.  Candidates selected to move forward will be given a conditional offer of employment.

The next steps include a comprehensive background investigation, a psychological evaluation, a medical examination, and a polygraph examination. It is required that the candidate pass each phase before a final interview with the Chief of Police. As an estimate, the hiring process can take anywhere between 45-90 days, give or take.

All non-certified auxiliary police officer applicants who are selected for part-time employment by the Portsmouth Police Department will be required to attend the next available Part-Time Police Academy Recruitment Class.
