Portsmouth's Stormwater Management Plan 

The problem with stormwater runoff is what the water picks up as it travels from precipitation to the sea. Pollutants generated from everyday life can be carried along, causing harmful impacts to local water resources. For example:

• Toxic chemicals from automobiles can lead to an increase in heavy metals, oils and greases.
• Careless application of fertilizers can contribute to algae blooms that severely degrade healthy aquatic environments. 
• Improper disposal of yard or pet wastes add harmful bacteria to water bodies, making them unsuitable for wading, swimming or fishing.
• Poorly-managed construction sites have been blamed for erosion and sediment migration, property damage, and destruction of local habitat.
